Infrastructure Development
Sadhana studied the life in the Kolwan valley which is its immediate environment. It found that the rural infrastructure in terms of water for irrigation, new farming techniques, post-harvest services, access to informal banking were some of the important problems affecting the improvement of rural life in the valley. It took up water conservation for irrigation and built three dams on river Walki so that water was strategically impounded. Then it organized five groups of farmers and helped them install community lift irrigation schemes. Then it took up training camps for farmers to initiate modern methods of cultivation and improved seeds. It has also set up a rice mill to help farmers to process their paddy after harvest. It has helped more than 125 families construct and use family toilets. It has conducted the study of drinking water with cooperation from Whitman Direct Action Group; and has assisted a village in setting up a drinking water scheme. Sadhana plans to set up an Infrastructural Service Centre (ISC) dedicated to the upliftment of 5000 families in the area. This ISC can become self-sustaining in about 7 years of operation. |
